U.S. Government Assists Flood Victims in Northern Namibia
The U.S. Embassy in Windhoek invited the media to the signing ceremony of a grant to the Namibia Red Cross Society for assistance to flood-affected communities in the six northern and north eastern regions of Namibia at 09h00 on Thursday, March 26, 2009 at the Namibia Red Cross Society Office in Katutura, Windhoek.
The United States Government, through the U.S. Agency for International Development’s Office of Foreign Disaster Assistance, made US$ 50,000 available to assist communities adversely affected by the floods. The funds will be used to procure health and hygiene items, shelter and other non-food items. First aid kits, plastic sheeting to construct toilets and showers, hygiene kits, jerry cans, gel stoves and gel fuel, soap and other items necessary to address the plight of relocated people in camps will also be purchased from these funds. Moreover, these funds will purchase six boats for use in rescue operations and the delivery of relief supplies.
The United States Government provided assistance during the 2003 floods in the Caprivi as well as during the 2008 flood disaster in Namibia’s northern regions.
